Fostering Creativity and Innovation in Malaysia's Virtual Production

Malaysia Virtual Production Originals (MYVIRTUO) is a government initiative designed to support the development of cutting-edge virtual production projects by providing financial aid and structured guidance from expert mentors. This programme also focuses on fostering original content in the virtual production space while incorporating a strong Malaysian identity.

Through industry collaboration, MYVIRTUO will collaborate with industry partners to bring expertise in virtual production and support MYVIRTUO. The industry partners will act as stakeholder to strengthen the impact of MYVIRTUO on local and global digital content industries.

The industry partners will provide support through the following pillars:

Talent Development & Training

To provide expert mentorship and hands-on training through onboarding sessions and technical workshops.

To equip participants with industry-relevant skills in virtual production, Unreal Engine workflows, and VP studio operations.

Infrastructure, Facilities & Technical Support

To provide access to cutting-edge virtual production studios and technology at a subsidised rate, ensuring participants can develop high-quality content efficiently and cost-effectively.

To offer technical support, equipment, and software to enhance production efficiency and innovation.

Advisory & Industry Linkages

To connect MYVIRTUO participants with investors, industry leaders, and potential clients to explore growth opportunities.

To facilitate international collaborations and partnerships to expand Malaysia's VP footprint globally.

Promotional & Awareness Efforts

To leverage platforms, events, and industry networks to promote MYVIRTUO, increasing visibility and engagement.

To showcase MYVIRTUO projects at industry events, exhibitions, and digital platforms to highlight innovation and impact.

The Incentives

RM 300,000.00

*Scope of Incentive - up to RM300,000.00 for each project

Project Duration

Project duration from six (6) to eight (8) months, commencing on the date of signing of the agreement between the Recipient and MDEC.

Required Output

  • Complete a 3-5 minute animation, live-action, or music video project incorporating at least three (3) Virtual Production (VP) scenes.
  • Provide digital assets for all VP scenes in Unreal Engine (UE) file or equivalent project files.
  • Publish the completed product on a commercial or social media platform.

*The incentive amount is subject to evaluation and assessment of the project proposal submitted by the Applicant and is to be determined by the Project Evaluation Committee

Bring animated storytelling to life with a captivating 3-5 minute pilot episode of an animated series or a short animated film, seamlessly integrating at least three (3) Virtual Production (VP) scenes to push the boundaries of visual creativity, enhance dramatic innovation, and deliver a truly immersive experience.

Produce an engaging 3-5 minute live-action pilot episode or trailer, seamlessly integrating at least three (3) Virtual Production (VP) scenes to elevate visual storytelling, enhance cinematic depth, and deliver an immersive viewing experience.

Eligibility Criteria

The Applicant is required to fulfil all the following criteria at the time of application and once the application is approved, at all times during the Project Duration and Availability Period. Failure to fulfil any of the eligibility criteria will lead to the application being rejected.

  1. a. If a company:

    • Incorporated in Malaysia under the Companies Act 1965 or Companies Act 2016; and
    • Active and a minimum of fifty-one percent (51%) of shares held by Malaysian(s);

    OR

    b. If an enterprise / sole proprietorship / partnership:

    • Registered in Malaysia under the Registration of Business Act 1956 or Trades Licensing Ordinance Sabah or Business, Professions and Trades Licensing Ordinance of Sarawak; and
    • Active and a minimum of fifty-one percent (51%) ownership belongs to Malaysian(s)

    OR

    c. If a limited liability partnership:

    • Registered in Malaysia under the Registration of Business Act 1956 or Trades Licensing Ordinance Sabah or Business, Professions and Trades Licensing Ordinance of Sarawak; and
    • Active and a minimum of fifty-one percent (51%) ownership belongs to Malaysian(s)
  2. Not the subject of a liquidation/winding up/bankruptcy order and has no going concern issue. The Applicant is required to submit liquidation/winding up/bankruptcy search result, which can be obtained from e-insolvensi's website here.

  3. Applicant is not blacklisted in MDEC Blacklist Register and by any enforcement/ authorities' bodies including but not limited to Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Security Commission Malaysia (SCM) and Central Bank Malaysia (CBM).

  4. Not a recipient of any grant/ funding / incentive programme administered by MDEC, National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), or MyCreative Venture Sdn Bhd, at the time of application.

  5. No outstanding repayment amount due from Applicant and/or its director(s), shareholder(s), owner(s), and/or partner(s) to MDEC under any grant/funding/incentive previously granted by MDEC.

  6. Director(s) and shareholder(s) of the Applicant to declare any business relationship/ immediate family relationship with any of MDEC's directors or employees.

Milestone Disbursement

The milestone disbursement will be processed based on the progress milestone submission and achievements of the verified deliverables by MDEC and in accordance with the agreement

  • Pre-Production – 20%
  • Production – 40%
  • Post- Production/Final Delivery – 40%

Application & Selection Process

Online Submission:

Applications will undergo a thorough review upon submission closure.

Pitching Session:

Eligible applicants will be invited to present their project proposals to the Project Evaluation Committee.

Notification of Results:

All applicants will be informed of the official results via email after the pitching session.

Agreement Signing:

Selected applicants (Recipients) must sign an agreement with MDEC to formalise participation in the MYVIRTUO programme.

Project Extension Requests:

Recipients may request a maximum 3-month extension with justification and supporting documents at least one (1) month before project expiry. Approval is subject to MDEC's discretion.

7

Extension Terms:

Approved extensions do not alter the approved funding amount but will adjust the project timeline accordingly.
