Cyberjaya, 5 June 2025 – The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) proudly congratulates Wau Animation, an MD Status company, on the phenomenal success of Ejen Ali The Movie 2 (EATM2), which has surpassed RM40.6 million at the Malaysian box office within just 13 days of its release. This remarkable milestone sets a new benchmark for locally produced animated films.

EATM2 showcases the exceptional ability of Malaysian studios to cultivate local talent and craft compelling original stories, brought to life through stunning visuals and a powerful original music score. The success of EATM2 not only elevates the Malaysian animation industry but also inspires a new generation of digital content creators to strive for excellence.

“The success of Ejen Ali the Movie 2 is a testament to the world-class capabilities of our homegrown studios and creators,” said Anuar Fariz Fadzil, CEO of MDEC.

“MDEC is honoured to have supported this achievement through the  Digital Content Grant (DCG), which aims to accelerate the growth of high-quality, exportable digital content. Ejen Ali stands as a proud symbol of Malaysian storytelling excellence, inspiring a new generation of creators to dream boldly.”

Usamah Zaid Yassin, Founder & Executive Director, Wau Animation added, “It’s a victory not just for us, but also for the entire local animation industry. Thank you MDEC for having faith in our homegrown talents. We are grateful for all the guidance and support that has been given ever since our humble beginning. I hope that this will open up more opportunities for upcoming studios and creators out there.”

This achievement is aligned with the aspirations outlined in the DICE (Digital Content Ecosystem) Roadmap, which charts Malaysia’s journey to becoming a leading global digital creative hub by 2030. To date, the creative content industry has contributed more than RM87 billion in total revenue, RM11 billion in export value, and RM80 billion in cumulative investments.

Since its inception, Wau Animation has benefited from MDEC’s comprehensive digital content support ecosystem, which began with early-stage incubation, followed by DCG funding for its first feature film, and continued with advisory, promotional, and networking support.

In line with the strategic objectives of the DICE Roadmap, MDEC is currently calling for submissions for the Animated Short Challenge, aimed at nurturing the next generation of IPs to follow in the footsteps of Ejen Ali, Upin & Ipin, BoBoiBoy and Mechamato. Applications are open until 13 June 2025. Kindly visit this link for submission: https://www.mdec.my/animated-shorts-challenge
