Malaysia Tech Month 2021 (MTM 2021) is a mega-virtual, month-long curation of electrifying digital and technology keynotes, workshops, discussion panels and business-matching sessions. It will feature distinguished group of local and international industry speakers and investors to share their expert thoughts and experiences in 4IR-driven digital economy.
MTM 2021 will see exciting programmes that will allow the spotlight to be shone upon digital ecosystem leaders and creators, leading-edge companies as well as talents, enabling all stakeholders to discover new perspectives on domestic and global trends in artificial intelligence, drone tech, data analytics, fintech and digital workforce.

Tan Sri Tony Fernandes

One of Asia’s most recognisable entrepreneurs, Tony Fernandes is best known for co-founding low-cost carrier AirAsia with Datuk Kamarudin Meranun and democratising air travel in the region.
Fernandes and Datuk Kamarudin famously bought the ailing airline for a token MYR1 (approximately USD0.25) and MYR40 million in debt, turning it around within two years and growing it from a Malaysian domestic carrier into Asia’s largest low-cost carrier by passengers carried.
Fernandes studied in the UK, and qualified as an Associate Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in 1991 and Fellow Member in 1996. An accountant by training, Fernandes began his career in Richard Branson’s Virgin Group before returning to Malaysia as Warner Music Group’s Vice President for Southeast Asia before venturing into the airline business.
Fernandes has received numerous honours and awards over the course of his career. These include the Honour of the Commander of the Order of the British Empire, conferred by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2011, and the Commander of the Legion d’Honneur, awarded by the French government for his outstanding contributions towards the economy of France through the aviation industry.

As a member of the expert panelist in Malaysia Qualifications Agency (MQA), Dr. Lau provides accreditation to ensure the curriculum of universities meets the requirements and modern trends. He is also appointed by universities and government agencies including MDEC and state governments as Industrial Advisory Panel to develop the blueprints and strategies on a national level. Back in October 2019, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT Corporation), brought together the capabilities of 31 companies, including NTT Communications, Dimension Data and NTT Security into one US $11 billion business. where Henrick was instrumental in ensuring the smooth transition and integration of the local Malaysian operating companies. H.E. OKA Hiroshi is the Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia since November 2019. He has nearly 40 years of experience in diplomatic activities having joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan in 1982. Prior to Malaysia, Ambassador OKA also served as Ambassador of Japan to Turkey, Minister of the Embassy of Japan in the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabic. He has served in a range of bureaus and departments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan. He was the Director General of Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau in 2017 as well as Director General of Intelligence Analysis Service in 2014. Ambassador OKA graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of Tokyo in 1982. He speaks Japanese, English and Arabic.

Smita Kuriakose is a Senior Economist in the Finance, Competitiveness and Innovation Global Practice in the World Bank. She is currently based in the Malaysia Knowledge and Research Hub where she leads the work program on private sector development, innovation and entrepreneurship. Her expertise is in science, technology & innovation policy, skills development, business environment and competitiveness.
Her work has covered over 20 countries. She has led regional flagships publications in the Europe and Central Asia, East Asia and Pacific and Africa regions on innovation and entrepreneurship issues and multi-sectoral operations of both Development Policy and Investment Policy Instruments. In East Asia and Pacific region, she has led policy dialogues on innovation and entrepreneurship in China, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand.
Prior to joining the Bank in Washington DC, she worked on a United Nations Project and the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Unit of the World Bank at New Delhi, India where she focused on fiscal and macro policies. Smita holds graduate degrees in Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park in the US and the Delhi School of Economics in India.
YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah

Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah is the current Minister of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia and member of Parliament for Indera Mahkota constituency. Previously, he served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Minister of Higher Education. Saifuddin is a progressive politician who advocates New Politics, youth empowerment and social entrepreneurship, also actively promoting debate and basketball. He is also the founder of the Women National Basketball League and Co-Founder of the Malaysian Universities’ Royal Debate.
Saifuddin has also served as the President of the Malaysian Youth Council, a Member of the United Nations Secretary General’s High-Level Panel on Youth Employment, a Consultant of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and Joint-Secretary of Bosnia Action Front. He was also a passionate student activist. During his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs, he authored the Foreign Policy Framework of the New Malaysia in 2018, which served as Malaysia’s key foreign policy priorities. He has published eight books, the latest of which being New Politics 2.0: Multiracial and Moderate Malaysian Democracy (2017). He has also contributed as a columnist in various publications.
Born in 1961, Saifuddin studied at The Malay College Kuala Kangsar and received a BA (Hons) from Universiti Malaya. He is married to Norlin Shamsul Bahri and they have a daughter, Nur Madihah.

Dr Rais Hussin is an avid strategist, perennial wordsmith, social engineer, serial entrepreneur and serious policy intellectual. He is also the President and CEO of EMIR Research that specialises in data driven research on any given national or international issues. He has more than 23 years corporate experience in leading and managing local and global telecommunications, technologies and IT companies. He has been actively promoting inbound investment, technology and execution for high-tech high value projects in Malaysia and the exciting growth markets of the ASEAN economic zone. Among the issues that fascinate him are those related to disruptive change, big data, the wide use of apps driven economy, algorithms and artificial intelligence. Straddling between science, strategy, communications, and policy advice, Dr Rais has sought to convince governments to adopt private public partnerships as advocated by the World Bank, to resolve any market break down or conundrums. Dr Rais Hussin received his Bachelors in Economics (Hons), Masters in Management and Doctorate in Business Administration from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

Surina Shukri brings two decades of experience working across a diverse range of companies including global multinationals, middle market companies and early stage startups across the financial services, natural resources and technology sectors. She spent the bulk of her professional career in the United States, including 17 years of experience as an investment banker, strategist and leader at JPMorgan Chase & Co., the largest bank in the United States. There she served as Head of Strategy, Innovation & Business Management for Middle Market Banking, Head of Strategy for Commercial Banking, Chief Staff to the CEO and Executive Director in Natural Resources Investment Banking. Surina left JPMorgan Chase in 2018 to start SheNovation Ventures, a transformation and growth venture studio where she advised fintech and blockchain startups on growth strategy and capital raising and consulted business leaders on culture change and transformation. She graduated from University of Pennsylvania’s Management & Technology dual degree program with a Bachelor of Science in Economics from The Wharton School and Bachelor of Applied Sciences in Systems Engineering from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Tan Sri Halim is a career diplomat by profession. He was the Chief Secretary to the Malaysian Government from 1996 -2001. Upon his retirement from the civil service, Tan Sri Halim served as the Chairman of various prestigious organisations, such as the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), University Technology Malaysia and various public listed companies.

Sharil Tarmizi is presently a consultant focused on corporate and regulatory advisory work. He was a former regulator in the internet, telecoms, online media as well as the postal and express delivery industry. He had two tours of duty serving Malaysia’s telecoms, media and postal and digital signature regulator, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) where he was in the pioneer team during the formative years of MCMC (2000-2006) after the cessation of Telekom Department of Malaysia (Jabatan Telekom Malaysia) and the Broadcast Licensing Division, Ministry of Information (Bahagian Perlesenan Penyiaran, Kementerian Penerangan Malaysia). He was also a member of the MSC Status Application Committee and subsequently joined the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) as a Board member in early 2009. He remained on the MDEC Board after he joined MCMC to become its Chief Operating Officer in mid-2009 before later being appointed as its Chairman and Chief Executive in late 2011. He ended his service with MCMC in December 2014 and the MDEC Board in April 2015.

Dr. Avik Sarkar heads the development of India Data Portal – one stop portal for analysis and visualization of government data and working on the societal aspects related to use of emerging technologies like trustworthiness, ethics and privacy at Indian School of Business. He was the Former Head of Data Analytics Cell and Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India Aayog) – developing Indian’s first AI Strategy and roadmap for use of data, analytics and artificial intelligence for Governance & Policy. Dr. Sarkar is multiple TEDx speaker and has been nominated among the “Top 10 Data Scientists in India” in 2017 by the Analytics India Magazine and nominated as “LinkedIn Influencer” in the Technology space in 2015. Dr Sarkar actively participates in India’s policy making and regulations through various government committees. Dr Sarkar has over 20 years of experience across different aspects of artificial intelligence, data science, analytics, statistical modelling, text mining, network analysis across companies. Dr Sarkar has authored several technical publications and technology patents.

Dr Justin Lee is the Ambassador to the Australian High Commission to Malaysia. He is the senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently First Assistant Secretary, Multilateral Policy Division. He has previously served overseas as Head of Mission in Bangladesh; Deputy Head of Mission in Jakarta; and in Port Moresby. Dr Lee holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Development Studies) and a Bachelor of Arts (Jurisprudence) (Honours) from Adelaide University; and a Graduate Diploma in Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University.

Dr. Chinawut is currently the Executive Vice President and Acting Director of Digital Industry Promotion Department at Thailand’s Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa). He is also the Independent Director for InnoSpace (Thailand) Co. Ltd. Prior to joining depa, he was the Director of New Venture & Entrepreneurship and Chief Strategy Officer at National Science Technology and Innovation Policy Office. His previous roles include the setting up of Start-up Thailand platform as well as the launching of new laws and regulations to support new breed of innovative entrepreneurs. Dr. Chinawut holds a PhD in Technology and Innovation Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Troy, New York, USA and also a MS in Public Policy (Science, Technology and Innovation Policy) from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Norsaidatul was part of the Pioneer Team of the Multimedia Super Corridor set up by the Prime Minister’s Department of Malaysia.
