A holistic approach, incorporating triple-bottom-line, i.e. People, Planet and Profit considerations, will also serve as a sound business model that supports continuity and competitiveness in the longer term.&nbsp;

Why is it important to Malaysia&rsquo;s digital economy?&nbsp;

Our Government has committed that we will achieve net-zero as early as 2050 and to take into account ESG principles in government decision-making. This requires a concerted, whole-of-nation effort and a high level of green commitment and investment to ensure that we achieve our climate change goals and step up the country&rsquo;s competitiveness.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Although the industry has an ostensibly clean business model, studies estimate that the global digital economy&rsquo;s share of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions ranges from 1.8 percent to 2.8 percent and is rising, as is energy usage. However, to counterbalance this, studies also show that smart digital solutions have the potential to reduce global GHG emissions by up to 15 percent by 2030 across a variety of areas from agriculture, to energy, manufacturing and transport.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Further, the &ldquo;Digital with a Purpose&rdquo; report by the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) suggests that digital tech solutions can positively contribute to 103 out of the 169 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Malaysia&rsquo;s expanding digital economy, which is targeted to contribute at least 25.5 percent of GDP by 2025, reflects these global trends and clearly has a critical role to play in the nation&rsquo;s shift to more sustainable economic practices on both fronts.&nbsp;

Why should digital companies embrace ESG?&nbsp;

I firmly believe that a strong sustainability profile will give Malaysian businesses a competitive edge in the global digital marketplace.&nbsp;

Without a doubt, ESG factors are having a greater influence on digital companies, from customer behavior to investor and stakeholder expectations, to reporting requirements.&nbsp; Clearly, a number of exemplar companies already exist in the industry that are fully committed to ESG and sustainability, such as Astro, Axiata, Digi, Media Prima and TM to name a few. However, many businesses still have a limited understanding of the positive impact of embracing sustainability on corporate performance and are hesitant to commit.&nbsp;

What are some questions an organisation should ask before starting on its sustainability journey?&nbsp;

An organisation that is aiming to make sustainability its core value and part of its corporate strategy should consider:&nbsp;

ADVANCING ESG TO ESTABLISH A SUSTAINABLE DIGITAL ECONOMY

CYBERJAYA, 27 JULY 2022:&nbsp;Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Malaysia&rsquo;s lead digital economy agency, today announced the Global Online Workforce (GLOW) Aspirasi programme for 2022, an initiative to continue supporting Malaysians to become competitive digital freelancers on a global platform.

GLOW Aspirasi is a distinct programme that echoes GLOW, the main programme that was introduced in 2016, and focuses on providing intensive training and mentoring sessions conducted solely by MDEC to ensure its quality and effectiveness.

Scheduled to run between May and September 2022, the programme is set to train, coach and mentor 4,000 Malaysians into becoming digital freelancers. It aims to assist at least 75 percent of the digital freelancers trained to generate income.

&ldquo;Driven by digital platforms that complement the demand of the current economic landscape, GLOW Aspirasi intends to match the supply to those demands and promote access for Malaysians who want to participate in the sharing economy.

&ldquo;We want to utilise and unlatch the idle asset in our economy and seize the opportunity to improve the household income, and that can be done through enhancing skills and improved employability of the gig workers,&rdquo; said Mahadhir Aziz, CEO of MDEC.

The programme targets unemployed graduates with priority for those who are holding diplomas or bachelor&rsquo;s degrees in Information Technology (IT), Computer Science, Multimedia, Business, Marketing, Hospitality and Linguistic.

MDEC will also prioritise employees from the tourism and hospitality, media creative, and education sectors who were affected by the extremities of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly retrenched workers as well as those who experienced salary reduction of more than 30 percent.

Through the programme, participants will be given exposure and guidance to identify the potential online platforms that they can leverage their skills on as well as the training needed to enhance their skills.

The participants will be introduced to five pivotal clustered-topic such as websites, IT and software; content writing; design, media and architecture; data entry and virtual office admin; and sales and marketing.

The sessions will be led by GLOW trainers who are experienced freelancers with commendable track records and will also provide a free-of-charge virtual mentoring up to the point where participants have successfully garnered projects on platforms recognised by MDEC.

MDEC collaborates with a host of international and local platform partners to provide assurance for the freelancers to bid for jobs and projects in a safe and secure digital environment. Among the platforms are Upwork, Freelancer.com, Workana, Topcoder, 123RF, Favser.com, Rtist, Experfy, DesignCrowd and PeoplePerHour.

The GLOW programme was first introduced in 2016 to empower local talent through reskilling and upskilling courses and help online freelancing to be recognised as a lucrative career opportunity that can provide a sustainable income source.

Since it was introduced, GLOW has managed to train 73,198 individuals who managed to generate income of more than RM240 million combined.

CYBERJAYA, 27 JULAI 2022:&nbsp;Perbadanan Ekonomi Digital Malaysia (MDEC), agensi peneraju ekonomi digital Malaysia, hari ini mengumumkan program Global Online Workforce Aspirasi (GLOW Aspirasi), iaitu sebuah program untuk membantu rakyat Malaysia menjadi pekerja bebas digital yang lebih berdaya saing di peringkat global.

GLOW Aspirasi merupakan program sokongan kepada program utamanya, iaitu GLOW, yang telah diperkenalkan sejak 2016. Program baharu ini akan memberi tumpuan kepada penyediaan latihan intensif, dimana sesi bimbingan dijalankan sepenuhnya oleh MDEC untuk memastikan kualiti dan keberkesanannya.

Program yang akan dijadualkan berlangsung dari Mei hingga September 2022 ini akan menyediakan latihan, jurulatih dan mentor kepada 4,000 rakyat Malaysia untuk menjadi pekerja bebas digital. Ia menetapkan sasaran iaitu sekurang-kurangnya 75 peratus daripada peserta yang dilatih akan berjaya menjana pendapatan.

Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif MDEC, Mahadhir Aziz, berkata GLOW Aspirasi ini dipacu oleh platform digital yang memenuhi permintaan persekitaran ekonomi semasa.

&ldquo;Kami berhasrat untuk memadankan kedua-dua elemen berkenaan bagi mempromosikan akses platform digital kepada rakyat yang berminat untuk terlibat dalam perkongsian ekonomi.

&ldquo;Kami mahu memanfaatkan dan mengaktifkan semula aset-aset yang tidak dimaksimumkan penggunaannya dalam ekonomi dan merebut pelbagai peluang bagi meningkatkan pendapatan isi rumah. Program ini menyasarkan graduan menganggur dengan keutamaan diberikan kepada mereka yang memegang diploma atau ijazah dalam Teknologi Maklumat (IT), Sains Komputer, Multimedia, Perniagaan, Pemasaran, Hospitaliti dan Bahasa.

MDEC juga memberi keutamaan kepada pekerja dalam sektor pelancongan dan hospitaliti, kreatif media dan pendidikan yang terjejas akibat pandemik COVID-19, khususnya pekerja yang diberhentikan serta mereka yang dikenakan pemotongan gaji lebih daripada 30 peratus.

Menerusi program ini, peserta akan diberi pendedahan dan panduan untuk mengenal pasti platform dalam talian yang mereka boleh manfaatkan kemahiran, serta latihan yang diperlukan untuk meningkatkan kemahiran.

CYBERJAYA,&nbsp;21 July 2022:&nbsp;Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Malaysia&rsquo;s lead digital economy agency under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (K-KOMM) today initiated a call for partnership with e-commerce platform providers and ecosystem players to be part of the Program Perdagangan Digital Keluarga Malaysia (DE Dagang). DE Dagang is the continuation of previous campaigns namely the Go-eCommerce Onboarding campaign and Shop Malaysia Online campaign under the Belanjawan 2021 e-commerce Initiative (ECI).

DE Dagang is a programme under K-KOMM with the support of the Ministry of Finance (MOF), will run from September to December 2022 and it is aimed at helping entrepreneurs in targeted sectors such as agriculture, tourism, Malaysia made products and SME Export to adopt and leverage on digital platforms to prosper. &nbsp;

In line with the Government&rsquo;s Transition to Endemic phase for COVID-19 from 1 April, the campaign aims to encourage e-commerce and e-wallet spending on offline products and services that can be utilised in store to drive footfall to local businesses.

MDEC is seeking Digital Platform Partners consisting of both local and foreign platform providers to co-fund the campaign with MDEC to benefit local sellers.

This year&rsquo;s campaign will see the introduction of a new incentive for system enhancement and infrastructure support, or marketing and promotional activities, made exclusively to local Digital Platform Partners.

MDEC also welcomes Supporting Partners ranging from relevant Ministries, trade associations and agencies to collaborate and increase outreach activities and promotions for the campaign. &nbsp;

The 2021 iteration of this campaign generated over RM6.45 billion in sales for Malaysian business over 153.92 million transactions. The campaign successfully partnered with 27 e-commerce and e-payment partners.

More than 886,000 local merchants benefited from the programme, out of which, 414,000 were businesses newly onboarded into eCommerce while, 279,000 were businesses owned by women.

CYBERJAYA, 19 JULY 2022:&nbsp;The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Malaysia&rsquo;s lead digital economy agency, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UN Global Compact Network Malaysia &amp; Brunei (UNGCMYB) to further raise&nbsp;awareness, build capacity and increase adoption of sustainability and climate action across the digital economy in Malaysia. &nbsp;

The UNGCMYB is the official local network of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), which aims to mobilise a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders. UNGCMYB works to awaken, activate, and accelerate Malaysian and Bruneian businesses to be sustainable and profitable.

MDEC and UNGCMYB will work together to raise awareness, build capacity, and increase adoption across businesses in the digital economy in five key areas:

	<li style="text-align: justify;">Developing a Climate Action Guide and Toolkit for digital economy businesses, to help them take action and to assess their carbon footprint;</li>
	<li style="text-align: justify;">Exploring ways to increase access to chargeable sustainability e-learning programmes for tech small and medium enterprises (SMEs); and promoting freely accessible e-learning resources, including through the Digital UNGC Academy;</li>
	<li style="text-align: justify;">Encouraging digital economy businesses to adopt initiatives that address Climate Change, for example renewable energy or energy efficiency measures;</li>
	<li style="text-align: justify;">Promoting sustainable practices among tech organisations to help them achieve sustainable performance; and</li>
	<li style="text-align: justify;">Developing and collaborating on outreach and engagement events.</li>
</ol>

The MoU builds on existing cooperation between both organisations, namely the Malaysia Businesses Sustainability Pulse Report 2022 with MDEC as a partner. The report was launched on 14 July 2022 and aimed to gain an understanding of the extent of readiness of Malaysian businesses in adopting, measuring, managing, and monitoring sustainability within their respective organisations.

Chief Executive Officer of MDEC, Mahadhir Aziz, said the public-private approach towards championing sustainable actions is imperative and has been made a national development priority as outlined in the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (12MP), which is aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

&ldquo;Sustainability is not a new buzzword but an important goal that goes hand in hand with the development of a thriving digital economy. MDEC, as the lead agency in advancing Malaysia towards becoming a globally competitive digital nation, is fully committed to encouraging the adoption of sustainable practices in the digital economy ecosystem.&nbsp;

&ldquo;Businesses may find it difficult to translate and relate to SDGs as these goals can appear to be beyond their grasp. Part of the efforts following today&rsquo;s MoU signing is to help provide resources and actionable items that can be adopted by businesses to achieve SDGs,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;

Executive Director of UNGCMYB, Faroze Nadar added, &ldquo;The digital economy will be the heart of global development moving forward, hence it will play an outsize role in ensuring sustainable development. With this partnership with MDEC we aspire that the Malaysian digital economy ecosystem will be a key catalyst for sustainable nation building and as a global contributor to achieving the SDGs&rdquo;.&nbsp;

This MoU is aligned fully with the Government&rsquo;s priority to continue building sustainable economic growth that is&nbsp;inclusive for everyone and to ensure that no one is left behind.&nbsp;

Malaysia remains committed to climate action and is striving to become a carbon-neutral nation at the earliest by 2050. As outlined in&nbsp;12MP, the Government is aiming for a&nbsp;45 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity of GDP by 2030, compared to a 2005 baseline, and to achieve a&nbsp;31 percent renewable energy mix by 2025.

MDEC – UNGCMYB SIGNS MOU TO ACCELERATE SUSTAINABILITY AND CLIMATE ACTION ADOPTION IN THE DIGITAL ECONOMY

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 July 2022&nbsp;&ndash; Prime Minister YAB Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob today launched Malaysia Digital, the initiative to accelerate the growth of the nation&rsquo;s digital economy for the benefit of Keluarga Malaysia.&nbsp;

Driven by the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (K-KOMM) through Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Malaysia&rsquo;s lead digital economy agency, Malaysia Digital is a national strategic initiative by the Government to encourage and attract companies, talents and investment while enabling Malaysian businesses and the Rakyat to play a leading part in the global digital economy.​

Malaysia Digital is the initiative to succeed MSC Malaysia, which has served to transform Malaysia into a knowledge-based economy since 1996. With a new and enhanced framework, the new initiative seeks to enhance the nation&rsquo;s digital capabilities and boost the digital economy.

Malaysia Digital will allow Malaysia to better prepare for today&rsquo;s ever-evolving landscape and build the bedrock of a digital nation, ultimately benefitting the Rakyat, businesses, Government, and nation.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

To achieve this vision,&nbsp;the role of the industry is equally important for an impactful implementation of the Malaysia Digital initiative.&nbsp;

YB Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima TPr Annuar Haji Musa, Minister of Communications and Multimedia, said that Malaysia Digital is a testament to the continued efforts of K-KOMM and MDEC to spur Malaysia&rsquo;s digital economy, in line with the Ministry&rsquo;s vision to establish a society that is informed, creative, and digitally cultured.&nbsp;

&ldquo;The digital transformation of the nation and the Rakyat will continue to be the priority of K-KOMM&rsquo;s initiatives, as I believe that digital technology is no longer the vision of the future, but the reality of today. The launch of Malaysia Digital will serve as a stepping stone for the nation&rsquo;s digital economy to achieve greater heights in the future,&rdquo; adds Tan Sri Annuar.&nbsp;

&ldquo;K-KOMM and MDEC will establish a dedicated platform for the industry to continuously participate and provide valuable feedback on Malaysia Digital, which will include private-sector representatives from relevant industry bodies and organisations as subject matter experts,&rdquo; he further said.

Malaysia Digital is built to address three strategic priorities, which are to&nbsp;drive digital adoption among aspiring young entrepreneurs, companies and the rakyat; support local tech companies to become &lsquo;Malaysian Champions&rsquo; and successful international players; and attract high-value digital investments.&nbsp;

To achieve these visions, the&nbsp;Government through MDEC will be introducing two initial Malaysia Digital Catalytic Programmes (PEMANGKIN), which are DE Rantau and Digital Trade.&nbsp;

DE Rantau is a programme to boost digital adoption and promote professional mobility as well as drive tourism across the country, with the goal to establish Malaysia as the preferred Digital Nomad Hub. Digital Trade, on the other hand, will drive interoperability and greater harmonisation of standards and regulatory approaches as well as to facilitate trade within and across borders.

Leading the execution of Malaysia Digital will be the Malaysia Digital Coordination Committee (MD-CC), which will serve to coordinate the governance and operations of Malaysia Digital, including awarding Malaysia Digital status to companies.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mahadhir Aziz, CEO of MDEC, said that the agency will continue to drive and accelerate the sustainable growth of the nation&rsquo;s digital economy with Malaysia Digital as the overarching initiative towards establishing Malaysia as the digital hub of ASEAN.&nbsp;

Malaysia Digital is bolstered by three key considerations &ndash; Flexibility, Agility, and Relevance &ndash; which will pave the way for the nation&rsquo;s ongoing and future efforts as well as add more PEMANGKIN to meet the needs and demands of the future as we step into tomorrow&rsquo;s digital frontier, today.&nbsp;
